Music + Style: Mod Bohemian [Shannon Eileen]

Meet Shannon Eileen. Creative blogger, talented musician and lover of the great Northwest. Shannon's blog Happiness Is... inspires me on a daily basis and her music truly soothes the soul. Her band, Lorelei's debut full length album is available on itunes and is an absolute must. I'm thrilled to share our little interview with you and a bit more of what makes her tick and gets her creative juices flowing..

What inspires you?

Other people in creative and artistic fields living their dream and doing what they love. Especially if they are sacrificing money and comfort to make it a reality.  

You have $100 to shop, where do you go?

Online shopping makes spending money way too easy! I would probably hit up ASOS, Ruche, ModCloth, Anthro, Free People, or Etsy vintage stores.

How would you describe your style?

Retro, bohemian, feminine, and comfortable. I like to wear at least one vintage item with every outfit. Lately, I've been into blazers, high waist shorts, 70's sundresses, rompers, architectural heels, and gold jewelry.

If you had to choose a different era to live in which would you choose?

Definitely mid-century for the style and idealism. But for equal human rights, I'm happy being born when I was!

Ellie Saab, Stella McCartney, Orla Kiely, Missoni, Bianca Benitez of Dear Creatures.

When your schedule is crazy how do you find your balance?

No matter how busy I get, I try very hard to take time out for myself, whether it's getting more sleep, allowing myself a night off, saying no to people or projects that can wait, shutting off my computer, or just rewarding myself when I feel I deserve it. ME time is very good for the soul.

What is your favorite city and why?

Seattle! I grew up in the NW so it will always feel like home to me here.  Not only is the city beautiful, but the people are grounded and down to earth.  Venice / Santa Monica would be a close second, since I lived there after graduating from USC and it's where my man and I met.  International cities are another story all together. I'd choose London, Venice, and Santorini.

When you are up on stage what brings you your calm and confidence?

Being well rehearsed! Also, seeing my loved ones' faces in the audience puts my mind at ease. As soon as I stop thinking about how I'm sounding or how I look, I'm completely at peace, 100% into the music and what it's saying.

Any advice for girls dreaming big?

Persevere. I struggle with this every day, whether to keep pushing towards the goal, or take an easier route in life. In the end, I always revert back to dream, because I wouldn't be happy doing anything else.

What album are you listening to right now?

Esperanza Spalding and her upright bass. That girl is talent.

Where do your lyrics come from, is it personal or just comes when you play?

My songs are usually personal and come from experiences I've had or experiences people close to me have had. However, I'm a private person, so I don't like to get too specific or detailed. I think a little bit of poetic ambiguity is good and allows others to connect and relate with the song. For me, lyrics take time to craft. I don't want people to misunderstand me, and I'm probably way too focused on what other people will think. I sure wish I was the type of songwriter who could make up a song on the spot!


Besides music, what is your creative outlet?

My blog keeps me creative on a daily basis. I'm constantly inspired by the things I discover online and I love sharing that inspiration with others. I also hope to one day open up an Etsy shop with my own artwork... details TBA  ;)

Ladybird: Dom-'Living in America'

TGIF, today i felt extremely happy to live here in the northwest and it made me think of this uber nationalistic song by Dom called Living in America. Whenever i hear this song it makes me laugh, but i guess what is more sexy than living in America?.... living in France.

Music + Style: [The Head and The Heart] Folk Modern meets Parisian Hip

Hello lovely readers! I am so excited to share this exclusive interview with you today as I truly feel it brings together everything The Daylight is about: heart + soul, music + style, art + design, and working on it meant reconnecting with an old friend and a woman who is doing what she loves and pursuing a passion. I hope this leaves you feeling a little lighter, a lot inspired and most of all, loving life....

 What inspires you?

 REALITY. Street fashion. Live performance. Relationships. Human emotion. Nature. Documentaries. The newspaper. Biographies. Travel. Love. Brokenness. Beauty.

Where do your lyrics come from, is it personal or just comes when you play?

They are very personal for all of the songwriters in the band (Jon, Josiah and me) and affect me  whenever I perform them. Songs recount histories and emotions, finding their origin in when they were written. I'm reminded of past memories whenever i hear them. The good and the bad.

How would you describe your style?

Individual. Haute couture inspired classic non trendy. Parisian hip. I wear a lot of black and neutrals, juxtaposing textures, eras and feminine/masculine pieces. I love lace, leather, (recycled) fur, silk and sequins; a pair of j brand jeans; a chain purse; a unique heel (I'm a shoe girl); oversized sweaters/button-ups and layers of gold jewelry.

You have $100 to shop, where do you go?

 Every city I visit, the first thing that i look up is a vintage/consignment store. There are always inexpensive gems that you will probably never find again. After that I would venture to a Zara, Anthropologie or Top Shop if around.

"I was in Charelston, South Carolina the other day. We played at The Music Farm with Dr. Dog and all of us had like an hour to explore downtown. I started walking, hoping to find a great shop or two. At first, I was fairly disappointed given there were seemingly only souvenir shops and this church bizarre-like flea market. I bought nothing, although did stop at one of the antique jewelry vendors, which put jewelry in my subconscious.
Exiting the flea market corridor, I ran straight into a mall with a few shops.
The only stores I found were middle-age shops for the southern mother: St. John and Talbot's. Out of desperation and a little hope, I walked into Chico's. Yes, I know, Chico's. But to my surprise I walked away with four jewelry pieces marked down to 10 dollars each (see picture). Wandering to the venue, I found "The Trunk Show" vintage shop on the street where I purchased a multi-color beaded small chain purse for under sixty!"

Do you have solo work?

 I'm contstantly writing songs with my guitar. Some may be used for the band and the others kept as my own (personally recorded or performed at the open mic).

What album are you listening to right now?

Dr. Dog's Shame, Shame (2010). We, The Head and The Heart, are on a U.S. tour with them actually. It's been a bit of a dream for us to support them as we have so much respect and fondness of their music. This album is one of my favorites and they kill it live!

Do you have other projects?

Nope. The Head and The Heart is my project; although I love fashion and film photography.

I know you've traveled a lot. What is your favorite city and why?

That's a difficult one to answer. There is so much of this world I have yet to see...As of now, it would either be Paris or New Orleans. Paris is such a historic and romantic city. And New Orleans. There's a soul in that town.

When you are up on stage what brings you your calm and confidence?

A shot of tequila and the wave of contentment and energy I get from doing exactly what I love.

What is your advice for girls dreaming big?

Keep dreaming big. Persevere and be confident in it. Take whatever it is that makes you unique and pursue that with as much fervor and earnesty as possible. Your resolute confidence and hard work in the pursuit will quiet the critics. I've tried to determine who I am and run with that.

Guest Post: FUJI FILES Art + Style [Bridget Riley]

Hi everyone! My name's Cristina and I write for a little blog called FujiFiles, and I'm a fellow coco+kelley contributor with Laura! I was so excited when Laura contacted me to do a guest post here, so I've jumped right in with artist Bridget Riley.

Riley's modernist works give me a bright, happy, retro feel, so I've put together a couple of looks that give me that same feeling!

This outfit includes a few of my favorite things, in a color palette I wouldn't typically think to put together. Pink, coral and cobalt are all so bold individually, I was inspired by the way Riley combined them in a such sophisticated way.

With this outfit I was inspired by the sail-like shapes within the painting, so I pulled together a look that I'd love to wear on a stylish day out boating. Enjoy!

Ladybird: Warpaint - Undertow

Warpaint is a new to hit mainstream band from LA. What i love about this band is how they have morphed from clean LA look to grungy new york look; they call themselves "progressive brutal" which i have no idea what that means. undertow is one of my favorite songs from this band but the entire cd pulls me in. when watching countless interviews i cannot understand how this band can actually finish a song but maybe the extreem craziness of this band makes them even better. Finally a good girl band, thank you warpaint for bringing the grundge back

I have to admit I love grunge. Being that grunge was born is Seattle the trend has never really left here, an oversized flannel has been a staple in my wardrobe for as long as I can remember..is that bad?

There is just something about that gritty relaxed look that I love, and these works of art give off that same vibe.
